Ans: Bhakti movement in Hinduism refers to ideas and engagement that emerged in the medieval era on love and devotion to religious concepts built around one or more gods and goddesses.

Bhakti movement was started in south India during the period between the 7th and the 10th century by Saiva Nayanar saints and Vaishnava Alvar saints of who spread the doctrine of bhakti among different sections of the society irrespective of caste and gender.

Bhakti movement preached against the caste system using the local languages so that the message reached the masses.

Ans: Contributions of Ancient Indian Mathematician in the field of mathematics is significant. Some of the key contributions of Indian Mathematician are given below:

1. The Indian mathematician, Aryabhatta discovered the use of zero in 5th century AD. He also developed the decimal system.

2. Bodhayan stated an early version of Phythagoras theorem.

3. Bhaskaracharya disclosed that if a negative number were divided by zero, the result was infinity. He also wrote amazing books, ‘Lilavati’ and ‘Sidhanta Shiromani’

(a) Discuss about the contributions of Arya bhatta in the field of Astronomy.     (See lesson-15)

Ans: The early expositions of Indian astronomy were designed to organize large sacrifices. These were recorded in the Jyotishavedanga. Aryabhata I (476 CE) was the first astronomer who tackled the problems of new astronomy. He invented a system of expressing numbers with the help of consonants and vowels, based again on the decimal place value principle.

The system was used by Bhaskara I (574 CE) and Aryabhata II (950 CE), and appliedin the astronomical Jaimini-sutras of unknown date. Aryabhata I of Kusumapura (Pataliputra or Patna) laid the foundations of scientific Indian astronomy in 499 CE. He taught astronomy to his pupils who included Pandurangasvamin, Latadeva, and Nihsanka. One of his successors, Bhaskara I was the author of the Laghubhaskariya and the Mahabhaskariya which follow Aryabhata’s system of astronomy. He also wrote a commentary on the Aryabhatiya.

It also takes account of the aesthetic instinct as well as the spiritual impulses of human being. It has also, in effect, an appeal to the subconscious as a force making for the formation of character.

The concept of coexistence has not been confined to the geographical and political boundaries of the country only. India has a universal outlook and it has been promoting the message of peace and harmony to the entire world. India has been raising a strong voice against racialism and colonialism. It has protested against the formation of power blocks in the world.

In fact, India became one of the founder members of the non-aligned movement. India is committed to the development of other underdeveloped nations. In this manner, India has been discharging her responsibilities as a part of the world fraternity and has been contributing to the progress of the world.
